From the 12th Floor
19, August 2014 - 18, September 2014

artwork inspired by views from the 12th Floor of New Walk Centre

New Walk Centre, the two-tower office block of nine and 14 storeys on Welford Place, has been the administrative home of Leicester City Council and a familiar feature of our skyline since the mid-1970s. The building is now set to be demolished as the Council’s headquarters move to City Hall on Charles Street.

To capture and celebrate the views from the building before they disappear forever, a group of artists were offered access by Leicester City Council to the 12th floor of New Walk Centre, during four Sundays in 2013, to inspire the creation of new work.

From the photographs, films, sketches and memories taken away from those four Sundays, local artists have created an astonishing and beautiful response to the views, from prints and photographs to performances and installations. These works will be exhibited across LCB Depot’s Gallery, café/bar and Print Room from Tuesday 19 August to Thursday 18 September. The exhibition is open to the public Monday-Friday 9am-5.30pm.

‘From the 12th Floor’ captures the excitement of seeing the City from a new perspective, offers a creative record of New Walk Centre, and showcases the breadth and depth of the artistic community in Leicester.
