Product Design Exhibition: DMU Graduates Show
16, October 2019 - 24, October 2019

Design Products at De Montfort University

Design and manufacturing have a long history in Leicester – with ‘industrial art’ being taught at the Leicester School of Art from the early 1870s. Today, the Design Products programmes at

De Montfort University continue this tradition with 224 students studying BA/BSc Product Design, BA Product & Furniture Design and MA/MSc Product Design.

All our courses are accredited by the Institute of Engineering Designers (iED) and in the last two British Industrial Design Association (BIDA) surveys, Design Products has been placed in the top three nationally for producing the most employable industrial design and product design graduates. Our academic staff are experienced designers and, along with The Design Unit (DMU’s design and research consultancy), are engaged in research or commercial activity.

The Design Products curriculum teaches students to investigate and define opportunities for product innovation, improvement and sustainability; focusing on Function, Users, Technology and Aesthetics.

On display, as part of Design Season 2, you will see the results of this engendered design process; the practices of iterative development through visualisation and prototyping are fundamental – delivering a range of concept proposals which represent interpretations of a design brief.

The conclusion of this methodology is the selection of the optimal design proposal – with critical detail then developed and evaluated through rigorous testing against specified product attributes. Refinement of the design proposal is then concluded with a final product presentation and specification, which represents an optimum and balanced resolution of the product design brief and criteria.

This exhibition is a showcase of the character of De Montfort University’s Design Products programmes, the talents of our students and the benefit of live projects with the design and manufacturing industry.
